Registered Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Service (RN HEALS)

Last January 19, 2011, the Department of Health announced that unemployed nurses may now practice their professions under a new program called the RN HEALS program.  This was announced by Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz as part of the DOLE project. The online registration started last January 17, 2011 and will run until February 4, 2011. This program aims to deploy unemployed nurses to poor communities in the country.

RN HEALS stands for Registered Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Service.  RN HEALS is a program of the government primarily a DOLE collaborative project with the Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD), Philippine Regulations Commission-Board of Nursing, and the Philippine Nursing Association (PNA).

RN HEALS aims to make essential health services available to all Filipinos by training and deploying 10,000 unemployed nurses in rural and far flung communities within this year.  This program may also solve the problem of having a shortage of skilled and experienced nurses in more than 1,221 rural communities, wherein all nurses are taking their chances in urban areas.

Registered nurses who are physically and mentally fit and are willing to serve in their municipalities may apply online through http://www.nars.dole.gov.ph.  Applicants should check the DOLE website from February 7-10, 2011 for the list of successful applicants.  Orientation will be provided prior to deployment on February 11-12, 2011 in their own provincial centers of assignments by the DOH, DSWD, Professional Regulation Commission-Board of Nursing and Philippine Nurse Association.

A certificate of competency and employment will be given upon completion of the assignment and will be given 8,000php a month by the DOH as their allowance.  LGUs are encouraged by the government to provide additional allowances for board and lodging of at least 2,000php to qualified nurses.  Additional benefits such as Philhealth services and Government Insurance System will be provided for the group insurance of the qualified nurses.

BELL'S PALSY: A Nerve Damage

What is Bell's Palsy?
Maritess Manalang-Quinto, RN, MANc

Bell's Palsy also known as facial nerve paralysis is a cranial nerve disorder.  It involves the cranial nerve seven, which causes weakness and paralysis of the facial muscle.  The cause is unknown.  Possible causes maybe viral, such such herpes simplex or herpes zoster.  Other possible causes maybe because of vascular ischemia (lack of circulation) or due to an autoimmune disorder (alterations in immunity).  Individuals who are afflicted with this disorder will have problems in moving the facial muscle and will cause discomfort in making facial expressions.

Spontaneous recovery may be possible within 3 to 5 weeks using corticosteroid therapy to reduce inflammation that may restore the circulation of the blood.  Patients may experience facial pain, which may be controlled by analgesics.

Electrical stimulation may also be helpful to prevent muscle atrophy (muscle wasting) since the facial muscles are not being used.  A surgical exploration by using surgical decompression of the facial nerve may be done to clients with tumors, which causes lack of circulation in the nerve.

FACEBOOK IS CLOSING

I am not so sure on what to say... I have mixed emotions.  Although facebook just like any other social networking site has really some possibilities to close down, I did not realize that it would be too soon. If you have files, photos, videos wherein you do not have any back ups, I suggest you better copy them now before its too late.  We do not know if this is a joke but as for my opinion, I do not want to let those precious memories fade away with just a snap.

FACEBOOK IS CLOSING ON MARCH 15, 2011. Like anything in this world, change is the only one that is constant.  I might just buy facebook for everyone! :)

Two sides of the story: Read the links for more details.
